Chuck's Ducts Dryer Vent Cleaning

How do you know if you're dryer vent needs cleaned? Here are some ways to tell.

1. Do your clothes take more than 30 minutes to dry? (Including towels and jeans)
2. Is the top of your dryer hot to the touch?
3. Does your dryer heat up but your clothes stay wet?
If you experience any of these three problems your dryer is fine, but your dryer duct is clogged.

Types of vents and their particular problems are as follows.

1. Vented through the roof. These vents tend to clog in the roof cap. In the cap there will be either a screen (to keep out critters) or a dampener (small metal flap) which opens and closes when the dryer turns on and off. (Birds and squirrels will not go into these.)
2. Vented through the wall. (Birds nest in these) Some have a screen to keep the birds out, but keeps the lint in. If these are of an extended length or have more than one ninety degree turn they get clogged.
3. Vented under the slab. These will not only retain lint but also the water from your clothes. The caps on these must always be kept clean.

Some helpful tips

1. If you use dryer sheets (such as bounce, snuggle, etc.) you need to scrub your lint screen with a nylon brush and warm soapy water once every 6 months. These sheets leave an invisible film on the screen. (Just wiping the lint off after every load does not remove film.) Use your remaining sheets in your pants pockets to repel mosquitoes. Liquid fabric softener in the washer is best.
2. Flexible tube from the dryer to the wall should be as short as possible to reduce length to the outside and too many turns and angles.
3. Have your dryer vent professionally cleaned once a year!!!
